Dan Hasty was named Tuesday, March 3, the new play-by-play broadcaster for the West Michigan Whitecaps, part of a new look in the booth this season for the Detroit Tigers' Class-A affiliate. Hasty, who has been with 97.1 FM The Ticket in Detroit for four years, succeeds Ben Chiswick as the main voice for the Whitecaps' broadcasts on radio station WBBL (107.3 FM).

FOX 17 meteorologist Jon Shaner is leaving WXMI-TV and he's leaving meteorology. But he's not leaving Grand Rapids. Shaner, who joined FOX 17 eight-and-a-half years ago, will be the new marketing director for the Salvation Army's Kroc Center.

Fine Tuning:

  • Raised: Nearly $1.4 million by listeners to Cumulus/Detroit News-Talk WJR AM 760 on Friday during the 28th Annual Salvation Army Bed & Bread Radiothon. Since retired jock Dick Purtan helped launch the effort, the philanthropic program has raised over $31 million to help feed and shelter the disadvantaged in Southeast Michigan.

A public memorial service will be held next month to honor Carl E Lee, the namesake for Western Michigan University's honors college and a radio and television executive. Lee died Feb. 22. He was 96.

WZZM-TV Ch. 13 Grand Rapids:

On March 1, 2015, WZZM 13 President and General Manager Janet Mason, will be one of six Michigan broadcasters inducted into the prestigious Silver & Gold Circle of the Michigan chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

Bay City Times:

Two public television premieres kick off a weeklong pledge drive on Saturday for Delta College's Q-TV: a look at the cultural history of the Great Lakes Bay Region and a Celtic concert. The spring pledge drive, which runs from February 28 through March 8, helps support programming on the station, explained Q-TV producer and director Bob Przybylski, and can be supported by calling 1-877-472-7677.
