Steve Harvey! From All Access this afternoon:
--- start quote ---
As first tipped here at ALL ACCESS, comedian, actor, and morning air-personality STEVE HARVEY is indeed returning to morning urban radio. HARVEY just signed a joint syndication arrangement with CLEAR CHANNEL's PREMIER RADIO NETWORKS and INNER CITY RADIO. He will be based at INNER CITY's flagship station Urban AC WBLS/NEW YORK, where he is scheduled to start on SEPTEMBER 19th.
Already lined up to carry the syndicated HARVEY morning show, beginning OCTOBER 3rd, are CRAWFORD BROADCASTING Urban AC WSRB (SOUL 106)/CHICAGO, INNER CITY stations in JACKSON, MS and COLUMBIA, S.C., and CLEAR CHANNEL Urban AC WMXD (MIX 92.3)/DETROIT, where HARVEY is guest-hosting this week.
This deal will pit HARVEY against REACH MEDIA's TOM JOYNER in THE MOTOR CITY. Look for this trend to spread, following a deal in which RADIO ONE purchased a controlling interest in REACH MEDIA, which is JOYNER's syndication company. In addition to DETROIT, RADIO ONE has already moved him to their stations in PHILADELPHIA and ST. LOUIS.

Looks like the "contest" at Mix 92.3 is over. Guess when a talent on the level of Steve Harvey becomes available, the chance to get him on your station, even in a syndicated format, overrides any promotion you might have been running. The Joyner versus Harvey battle should be very interesting for listeners who will have two quality shows to choose from on Detroit's Adult Urban stations, WMXD and WDMK-FM 105.9, home of Joyner's program.
