The music of Frank Zappa is explored in a conversation with his son Dweezil Zappa on Sunday's (June 11th) Ralph Valdez Program on Public WDET-FM 101.9. The show airs from 10pm - midnight. Dweezil Zappa is touring with ex-Zappa band mates in a show coming to The Meadow Brook Music Festival this week called 'Zappa Plays Zappa'.
Prolific American composer, guitarist, singer, film maker, social critic and satirist Frank Zappa continues to be an important and influential artist even after his death in 1993, with work spanning virtually every musical genre (including avant-garde, big band, blues, contemporary classical, doo-wop, electronic music, funk, hard rock,
jazz, jazz fusion, musique concrète, pop, progressive rock, proto-rap, reggae, rock, ska, and world music), and often noted for his intense blend of high art, low humor, general absurdity and modern vaudeville theatrics.
There will also be tickets given away for the latest multi media performance from Detroit playwright Ron Allen entitled "The Aboriginal Treatment Center,"described as "an examination of the archetypical Black man's mind." As always, other arts and culture information and a wide variety of "rummage sale records", music new and old, from around Detroit and around the world will also be explored.
WDET now offers "music on demand" - a special feature on WDET's website homepage at www.wdetfm.org which allows you to listen to archived shows at your leisure.
