Since helping to launch WBBL-AM (1340), program director Bret Bakita has honored local high school standouts for their athletic and academic accomplishments. He came up with a whopper of a way to do this. The combined resources of WBBL and WLAV-FM (96.9) and support from corporate partner Burger King has resulted in an Athlete of the Week program that honors 35 standouts in 23 sports from 26 high schools... Local radio stations, Burger King team to recognize athletes (Fri 6/9)


Chuck Furman, longtime WGVU-TV (Channel 35) employee, will be inducted into the Michigan Association of Broadcasters' (MAB) Broadcasting Hall of Fame this summer ... A new member to the WZZM-TV (Channel 13) sports team will head to West Michigan, take the airwaves on June 26 and cover events from local high school to professional sports. David Solano has been named the weekend sports anchor, carrying experiences as a sports reporter and anchor for WMAZ-TV in Macon, Ga., and a stint at KOIN-TV in Portland, Ore... Activist for public television honored in hall of fame (Sun 6/11)


Two days down and one to go. That poses the question -- "Who here is strong enough to do it again?" B-93 morning personality Neal Dionne shouted from the B-93 Birthday Bash stage Saturday in front of about 60,000 fans at the Ionia Fairgrounds. Combined with Friday night's Fox Fest, the two-day Birthday Bash is something of an endurance test for fans and organizers... The 2006 B-93 Birthday Bash may well be remembered as the Bash newcomers ruled. The 14th anniversary of the event -- sponsored by radio station WBCT-FM (93.7) -- began an expanded schedule Saturday under nearly ideal outdoor-concert conditions with an estimated crowd of 55-60,000 country music fans...
