Clear Channel-owned Rock WDTW-FM (106.7), known as “The Drive,” has dumped the format and the entire air staff in a move that stunned the DJ's at a mandatory meeting today at 11 a.m. VP/Programming Dom Theodore said “it was one of the most difficult decisions I have ever had to make.” Insiders felt the station was “under-performing” and a change was necessary. At noon, the station ran a pre-recorded announcement from legendary TV news anchor Bill Bonds stating that they were “building a brand new radio station” and letting you, the listeners choose the music. The “stunting” went on for two hours and then at 2 p.m. WDTW-FM began to play a very wide spectrum of music while management figures out exactly what they are going to do on the 106.7 FM frequency. The University of Michigan Football Team will take over Sports Talk WTKA AM 1050 Ann Arbor for a 12-hour Radiothon on Wednesday, June 7th, to raise funds and awareness for the U-M C.S. Mott Children's Hospital's capital campaign.
News/Talk WJR AM 760 plans to bring live coverage from the 2006 Detroit Regional Chamber Mackinac Policy Conference on June 1st and 2nd. WJR listeners can tune in to hear a Who's Who of guests as Paul W. Smith (5:30am-9am) and Frank Beckmann (9am-11:30am) broadcast live on Thursday, June 1st and Friday, June 2nd from the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island.
The most visible part of the deal makes Classic Top 40 WOMC-FM (104.3) the new flagship station for Michigan football, and will keep together the broadcast team of Frank Beckmann (play-by-play) and Jim Brandstatter (color commentary) and allow fans in Detroit the ability to hear the games for the first time on the higher-quality FM band. Beckmann has called Michigan play-by-play since 1981 and has become an integral part of the broadcasts, so much so that the negotiation of this deal was greatly complicated by the working of a deal between WJR, where Beckmann hosts a midday talk program, and Michigan who strongly desired the continuity of the Beckmann/Brandstatter pairing.
