The 20th Annual Dick Purtan Radiothon to benefit the Salvation Army's Bed and Bread Club succeed in raising $2,398,783 in 16 hours during today's event at the Oakland Mall. The 2007 total surpassed last year's effort by about $590,000. Classic Top 40 WOMC FM 104.3 devoted its broadcast day to the event which featured a large number of Metro Detroit television, radio, and business celebrities - along with a record amount of pledges from the community.

The crowd at Oakland Mall was most energized when the tally topped the $2 million mark at 9:00pm and again when Purtan was given a plaque by the Salvation Army to commemorate his 20 years helping to raise money for what has become one of the biggest radio fundraisers anywhere in the country.

Those in attendance during the last hour were also moved by the tributes to the late Gene Taylor and Mark Andrews - two of Purtan's People that cared deeply about the Radiothon and helped elevate it to what's clearly become the most significant grass roots charity drive in Metro Detroit.

Congratulations to everyone involved.

WOMC's web site features tons of pictures from the day's events.
