Grand Rapids Press:

I blame Richard Gere. No, not for smooching that Bollywood star in India a few weeks ago and almost getting himself arrested for public display of affection, but for renwed interest in ballroom dancing. It was late 2004 when that adorable movie, "Shall We Dance?" came out. You know, the one in which Gere plays a workaholic whose "whole life changes when the sight of a beautiful dance instructor inspires him to break out of his mold and sign up for ballroom dancing lessons." Six months later, in the summer of 2005, "Dancing with the Stars" foxtrotted across our television screens, eventually luring some 30 million of us to become addicted to the sight of B-list celebs and their exotic partners cha-cha-cha-ing. A coincidence? Now in its third season, "Stars" contestant and former N' Sync-er Joey Fatone has shown he can do a mean Paso Doble. (Well, not as mean as that cute Olympian Apolo Anton Ohno.) There's even a local edition of "Dancing with the Stars." Five Grand Rapids luminaries will swing, rumba and meringue in the 2007 WZZM 13 Dance Off competition on Friday, to raise money for breast cancer research... Dance-off lets GR 'celebs' step up for charity (Sun, 5/13)
