Family and friends of Fred Trost gathered Saturday to pay tribute to the man who put his thumbprint on Michigan's outdoor life. Mourners paid their respects during a memorial service in the auditorium of Holt High School to the longtime host of the popular hunting and fishing show, "Michigan Outdoors." "He lived life to the fullest," said Trost's daughter, Tara Wilson of Okemos. "We should all be happy for him." Trost, 61, of Lansing died of a rare lung condition July 18 after spending several weeks in Sparrow Hospital and the University of Michigan Medical Center... Flint Journal:

The decision not to renew the contracts of former morning news host Michael J. Thorp and Saginaw-based reporter Jeff Piechowski was "strictly economic," according Tom Bryson, president and general manager of WJRT (Channel 12). Thorp will remain under contract through the end of the year, but retains only his role as host of the stations' Sunday morning community affairs show, "Newsmaker" ... News at 7 p.m.: The local CW affiliate is moving local news coverage forward, to paraphrase a promo line from its sister station. WBSF (Channel 46) debuted "The Seven O'Clock News" on July 9. It's the first news program for CW46, which launched as a WB affiliate in October 2004, and the first 7 p.m. local news show in the Flint-Saginaw-Bay City market. "The Seven O'Clock News" is anchored by Jenny Suniga and meteorologist Mark Torregrossa of CW46's sister station WEYI (Channel 25)... WJRT ends Thorp's contract; CW46 joins the news business (Fri, 7/27)
