Metro Detroit: Newsmakers Aug 24, 2007

Detroit News:

The Comcast and WOW! cable providers said Thursday they are at an impasse with the Big Ten Network. The state's basic cable subscribers likely are to miss several Big Ten football games after the network goes on the air Aug. 30. That includes Michigan's Sept. 1 opener against Appalachian State, one of six contests to be broadcast on the network within the conference's eight-state footprint. Elizabeth Conlisk, a Big Ten representative, said negotiations with Comcast have gone sour. She said there still is hope a deal with WOW! could be worked out... Detroit Free Press:

Big Ten fans, brace yourselves if you're a Comcast subscriber. The football season begins Sept. 1, but the season-opening games on the Big Ten Network will not be available to Comcast customers, according to Bob Thompson, president of Fox's national cable sports networks. Fox Cable Networks is a partner with the Big Ten in the fledgling network. That would mean that the Michigan-Appalachian State game and five other openers wouldn't be available to about 5 million Comcast subscribers in Big Ten states. (Michigan State's opener against Alabama-Birmingham will be shown on ESPN2.) "If you are a fan of the Big Ten -- and certainly there are a lot of those in the state of Michigan -- and you want to have these games, you need to make other arrangements," Thompson told the Free Press on Thursday. "We're a week away, and having been through the launch of 15 some odd sports networks in the last 18 years, I've got a pretty good feel for this. "At this point, I can tell you we will not have agreement before the first weekend of games"... Sorry U-M, MSU fans with Comcast: No Big Ten Network for you (Fri, 8/24)
