Detroit Free Press:

Wondering why WRIF-FM's (101.1) top-rated morning show "Drew & Mike" has turned into the "Mike, Mike & Marc Show?" Regular cohost Mike Clark and producers Mike Wolters and Marc Fellhauer are carrying on without Drew Lane, who has taken some time off to help his significant other, Tess Schuster, get through treatment for breast cancer. Lane said Schuster needed some follow-up surgery after her initial procedure, when some internal bleeding developed. That and subsequent radiation treatments left her "really fatigued," Lane said. He said Schuster and her two sons from a previous marriage "have sacrificed a lot for me" and he needed to take time off to help get their home life back in order as she recuperates. "The station management and the guys from the show have been great in allowing me to get caught up," Lane said. Among other silliness, they've used recorded all-purpose Lane comments to respond to any issue and answer any question... WRIF lets Drew take care of Tess (Tue, 9/25)

The fates obviously smiled on WJBK-TV’s (Channel 2) first installment of its 11 p.m. weeknight newscast Monday. The UAW’s decision to strike GM gave the newscast an obvious lead story for the first edition of “Fox 2 News Edge at 11.” Anchor Huel Perkins opened the newscast with the requisite live shot of picketers and introduced a new reporter, Brad Edwards, who gave a John Stossel-like report on what could happen to GM sales if the walkout lasts a long time. (Stossel-like referred to Edwards’ voice inflection. )We’ll have to wait two weeks to see him again; the station showcased him Monday night then explained he needs time to move here after working at Grand Rapids’ WOOD-TV. Strike coverage ate up about six minutes, Then came a couple of short stories and Monica Gayle hosting a brief segment called “The Breakdown” on a school bus accident where fortunately no one was hurt... Channel 2's 11 p.m. newscast debuts (Tue, 9/25)
