Detroit Free Press:

As a kid growing up in northwest Detroit, Grace Gilchrist rushed home from school every day to have lunch with Soupy Sales. As an adult, however, it wasn't just laughs and giggles with WXYZ-TV (Channel 7). By then, Gilchrist had crossed over to the other side of the television, from happy-go-lucky viewer to longtime station executive. From the hang-loose childhood fun with Soupy and his pals Black Tooth and White Fang, to the extreme adult sport of surviving combustible anchormen like Bill Bonds and Frank Turner. Grace Gilchrist not only survived, she helped Channel 7 thrive over the last 21 years. A down-to-earth local who made good -- very good -- Gilchrist rose from sales manager to station manager and finally in 1995 to the top executive spot as WXYZ's vice president and general manager... Good night, Gracie: A local girl made good, Channel 7's leader Grace Gilchrist heads into retirement (Fri, 11/30)
