WJKN AM 1510 Jackson, owned by Spring Arbor University, has been silent since June 1st when it began experiencing technical difficulties with its transmitter and has been granted remain silent authority from the FCC.

WOAP AM 1080 Owosso, owned by 1090 Investments, has been silent since July 20th and has been granted remain silent authority from the FCC. In the application, WOAP states that grant of the special temporary authority to remain silent will serve the public interest by allowing the licensee to focus on resolving its financial concerns in an effort to resume station operations as expeditiously as possible, either at the presently authorized site or as specified in the construction permit authorizing a change in community of license to Waverly, Michigan.

• Educational Media Foundation closed on the purchase of the construction permit for WICE FM 88.3 Ironwood. The permit was purchased from Broadcasting for the Challenged for $400,000.

• Licenses were granted to the following new FM translators: W285DU 104.9 Fremont, W243BD 96.5 Beechwood, W225BA 92.9 Hastings, and W219DA 91.7 Paw Paw (owned by Horizon Christian Fellowship); W227BB 93.3 Fremont (Radio Assist Ministry).


• The construction permit for the following FM translator was canceled/deleted: W286AW 105.1 Dowagiac (owned by Horizon Christian Fellowship).

• A license was granted to the following new FM translator: W230BI 93.9 Lapeer (owned by Edgewater Broadcasting).

• High school WBFH-FM (88.1) Bloomfield Hills was served with an apparent notice of liability in the amount of $17,000 for filing late for its license renewal, unauthorized operations, and public file violations. Read the FCC Notice of Apparent Liability (.pdf)


• Contemporary Christian Smile FM's WEJC-FM 88.3 White Star/Gladwin signal was granted a construction permit to change its effective radiated power from 30,000 watts @ 472 feet from a tower location just southwest of Gladwin to 55,000 watts @ 374 feet with a directional antenna located in Bay county north of Auburn. The station started operating at reduced power starting on August 1st so that the old 6-bay antenna could be rebuilt and prepared for the new tower site along with rebuilding the station's RCA transmitter. After the move is finalized, the Saginaw, Bay City, and Midland areas will notice a much better signal from WEJC. As of August 6th, the station was operating with 2,000 watts @ 260 feet from its new Bay county location while final technical details of the move were being completed.

• A license was granted to the following new FM translator: W232BH 94.3 Holly (owned by Educational Media Foundation).

• Contemporary Christian Way FM's WAYG-FM 89.9 Grand Rapids has applied to change its frequency to 89.7 and change its effective radiated power from 4,900 watts @ 207 feet to 6,000 watts @ 243 feet. If approved and built, the station's directional pattern would change, gaining the station increased coverage on the west side of metro Grand Rapids with some loss of signal to the east.

• Darby Advertising has been granted a construction permit for a new FM station at 95.3 to be licensed to Frederic (Otsego County). The Class A station would broadcast with 3,300 watts @ 447 feet from a tower located about halfway between Gaylord and Grayling along I-75 if built as specified in the construction permit. Darby is also the licensee of variety hits WMJZ-FM 101.5 Gaylord and strongly associated with variety hits WMJT-FM 96.7 Newberry.


• The sale of WGHN-FM/AM 92.1/1370 Grand Haven to Will Tieman from William Struyk and Ronald Mass closed.

• 43 construction permits for FM translator stations that were issued in 2004 have expired and been canceled by the FCC-

• The Interlochen Center for the Arts (WIAA-FM 88.7 Interlochen) has agreed to sell FM translator W237CF 95.3 Mackinaw City to Baraga Broadcasting for $25,000 pending FCC approval and closing. Baraga plans to rebroadcast its Religious/Catholic WTCK FM 90.9 Charlevoix on W237CF.

• The FCC granted the sale of WBNZ-FM 99.3 Frankfort from Fort Bend Broadcasting to the Kalil Holding Group.

• Licenses were granted to the following new FM translators: W237BY 95.3 Mason and W262BD 100.3 Diamondale (owned by Educational Media Foundation).

• 2007 has been a busy time in Southwestern Ontario with several new radio stations signing on since the first of the year and others set to do so shortly:

- Religious CKGW-FM 89.9 Chatham

- Rock CIBU-FM-1 91.7 Bluewater (rebroadcasting CIBU-FM 94.5 Wingham

- Country CJSP-FM 92.7 Leamington

In addition, Sarnia will be getting an FM repeater for country CHOK AM 1070 on yet to be specified frequency and a new FM station at 103.3 that will repeat variety/community CKTI-FM 107.7 Kettle Point, owned by Kettle and Stony Point First Nation.
