Detroit News:

WTVS-TV (Channel 56) is celebrating a ratings victory, thanks to a significant spike in viewership in just a year's time, according to Nielsen Media Research. The local PBS affiliate compared Nielsen household ratings from the May 2007 and May 2008 books. In May 2007, household viewership of WTVS was 648,000. A year later, the number grew to 734,000, a 13.3 percent increase. "It's very exciting," says Dan Alpert, WTVS's station manager and chief operating officer. "We attribute the ratings to the big TV events we've had over the past year, (including) Ken Burns' "The War" (September 2007) and "Carrier" (April 2008). The writers' strike also caused people to check out other options. People are looking for something of substance without commercials, and they're still finding that at Detroit Public Television" ... WDIV-TV (Channel 4) reporter Art Edwards has left the station for a desk job in Portland, Ore... Higher viewership elates Channel 56 (Wed, 6/18)
