It's been several weeks now since WCHB-AM (1200)'s abrupt change in format, with a new tagline, "Mildred in the Morning and Inspiration all Day." But we haven't heard from all the aggrieved parties yet. Swept away in the news-talk purge were syndicated shows including the Rev. Al Sharpton's "Keeping It Real," and also local talk shows such as "Parker and the Man" featuring the Detroit News' Rob Parker and Real Detroit's Mark Wilson, and "Your Voice with Angelo Henderson," which ran weekday evenings. In place of the news-talk is mostly a jukebox of gospel music, although Mildred Gaddis' popular morning show remains, from 6-10 a.m. At the time, WCHB marketing director Kathie Stonehouse said that the change would give WCHB a "clearer focus," and that the new gospel programming "fills an obvious void where Detroit is underserved." But chalk the decision to dump news-talk up to cost-cutting by WCHB owner Radio One. It's much cheaper to run an automated jukebox than it is to pay actual humans to talk and interact with callers...
