WDET to hold "Don't Let Summer Pass You By" auction July 30

Detroit Public Radio has partnered with Travel Michigan for a special on-air auction on Wednesday, July 30 beginning at 6am. The "Don't Let Summer Pass You By" auction will offer listeners opportunities to bid on one-tank trips to some of Michigan's finest resorts and hotels. The auction is an opportunity for WDET listeners to get a great value on a Michigan getaway and support Detroit Public Radio.

Up for bid will be getaways to the Mackinac Grand Hotel, The Homestead Resort in Glen Arbor, Amway Grand Plaza Hotel in Grand Rapids, Detroit's Inn on Ferry Street, Crystal Mountain Golf & Ski Resort, Motor City Casino-Hotel, Garland Resort in Lewiston, Tickets to the PGA Championship at Oakland Hills, Treetops Resort in Gaylord, JW Marriot Hotel in Grand Rapids, Cobblestone Manor in Auburn Hills and more. Bids will be taken by telephone only at 1-800-959-9338 and the on-air auction July 30 will take place from 6am to 12 noon and 4pm to 7pm.

WDET listeners can pre-bid on the items at WDET's Auction Preview Party on Tuesday, July 29 from 5pm to 9pm at the Art Van Furniture store in Royal Oak at 32301 N. Woodward Avenue (between 13 and 14 Mile Roads). The preview party also includes contests to win a Polk Audio HD Radio and tickets to the PGA Championship coming to the Oakland Hills Country Club. Plus there will be Buddy's pizza, Michigan wines and live entertainment from Jamie McCarthy and Sara Celina. WDET personalities Craig Foley and Jerome Vaughn are also scheduled to be at Art Van for the preview party.

Detroit News:

Families and friends of four journalists dedicated a monument at a Phoenix park where the men died when their helicopters crashed while following a car chase. In a tearful ceremony Sunday, fellow reporters, police and other city officials placed flowers along a concrete memorial that carried the pictures of pilots Scott Bowerbank and Craig Smith and photographers Jim Cox and Rick Krolak. Mayor Phil Gordon and Fire Chief Bob Khan called them friends. Smith previously flew a news chopper for WXYZ-TV in Detroit...
