Mr. Shepard, of Grand Rapids, died Monday morning of cardiac arrest after suffering from congestive heart failure for many years. He was 81. Numerous friends said he had a passion for life and the radio industry. He ran Shepard Broadcasting for 50 years. "John was a wonderful man, a loving husband and he gave back to the community," WLAV-FM radio personality Tony Gates said. "He cared a great deal about professional broadcasting. He was very good at what he did. "I will always thank him for giving me my first shot in professional radio. I, along with many others, will miss John." Mr. Shepard owned and operated numerous radio stations in seven states, including WLAV-FM, for about 20 years. He sold the station in 1983 to Adams Broadcasting.
