WDET to launch "The Back Story" with Quinn Klinefelter Monday Aug 25

A new local weekday program has emerged out of the continuous coverage of political issues and events from WDET's news team. On August 25, "The Back Story" will begin airing Monday through Friday at 3:00pm on WDET 101.9FM and at www.wdet.org. WDET veteran political reporter Quinn Klinefelter will host the new daily hour-long program.

The concept for "The Back Story" developed out of the myriad of political stories facing southeast Michigan on a daily basis, including the crisis of Detroit city government as Mayor Kilpatrick faces 10 felony counts in two separate cases, the FBI's investigation of city officials in the Synagro deal, the multi-million dollar budget deficit of the Detroit Public Schools, the presidential campaigns and numerous important Congressional and state legislative races.

The program's debut week (August 25 - 29) will focus heavily on the Democratic National Convention taking place in Denver and the DNC's Debbie Dingell will speak with Klinefelter each day about what's happening on the convention floor. Other guests on the first week of "The Back Story" include CNN's Jamal Simmons who will report on Democratic strategies to take Michigan and PBS host Gwen Ifill talks about the historic nature of having an African American nominee from one of the major political parties. On Friday, August 29, "The Back Story" will broadcast live from the grounds of the Detroit Grand Prix on Belle Isle.

Week two of "The Back Story" (September 1 - 5) will look at the political weight of labor, the Republican National Convention and the state of the Detroit's schools, among other topics.

"The name 'The Back Story' was chosen because listeners will have a chance to hear the stories behind the stories," said Jerome Vaughn, WDET News Program Director. "We want to provide listeners with information that goes beyond the headlines so in depth interviews with newsmakers will fuel the show on a daily basis."

Host Quinn Klinefelter has more than 20 years of news reporting experience and has covered local politics for WDET for the past 10 years. His work has been recognized with awards from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters, the Michigan Associated Press, the Society of Professional Journalists and others. Klinefelter regularly reports for NPR and BBC News.

"The Back Story" with Quinn Klinefelter begins on WDET 101.9fm on Monday, August 25 and will air weekdays from 3pm to 4pm followed by "All Things Considered" at 4pm. NPR's "Fresh Air" with Terry Gross will move to weekdays at 2pm.
