Matt Shepard takes over mornings at WDFN
Sports WDFN AM 1130 has made it official and hired Matt Shepard as it's new morning show host as of yesterday. Listeners will be able to wake up and turn on Matt Shepard weekday mornings full time from 6am to 9am. A longtime veteran of WDFN, Shepard packs a wealth of knowledge of the Detroit sports scene with his experience on television for Fox Sports Net and on radio as the voice of the Detroit Shock and more.
WDFN touts Matt Shepard's morning show as the only local morning sports talk show in Detroit, the only place sports fans can comment on the games played the night before. He'll be followed by Sean Baligian who moves back to his original 9am-12p timeslot, Jim Rome 12pm-3p, Stoney and Wojo 3pm-6pm, and Sports Talk Soup 6pm-7pm.
The Tide is High at WOMC this weekend
WOMC's Labor Day weekend special gives a clear example of how the oldies format has shifted forward in time in recent years. Promoted as the biggest countdown in Detroit radio history, the Ultimate Big 30 Countdown will start Friday at 3pm and continue through the Labor Day weekend, counting down the Top 30 songs of every year from 1967 to 1981 - the year that Blondie's "The Tide is High" was a Billboard number one song for a week in January.
The countdown is a compilation of Billboard Magazine's Hot 100 charts and CKLW's Big 30 charts, recalling the Big 8's Big 30 Countdown's in the 1970's and Early 80's. The special programming will take a break on Saturday afternoon while WOMC airs its coverage of first Michigan football game of the new season against Utah. Kickoff is set for just after 3:30pm with Frank Beckmann and Jim Brandstatter back for another year of calling the games.
