Mid-Michigan: Newsmakers Nov 23, 2008

Saginaw News:

Christmas is approaching fast. Just turn on your radio to hear the proof jingling through your speakers. Adult contemporary station WSAG-FM, 104.1, started its Yuletide transmissions early, broadcasting Christmas carols beginning Nov. 1. "We've started early the last couple years," said Jim Kramer, operations manager for MacDonald Broadcasting Co., 2000 Whittier in Saginaw. "Listeners love it, it gets them in the mood, gets them going early. With the economy the way it is, they need a little pick me up. What picks you up better than a Christmas song?" ... Monday, WHNN-FM, 96.1, also started filling the airwaves with mirth-filled tunes. "Last year we did it earlier," said Scott A. Stine, WHNN program director. "We go with when it feels right." Stine cited frequent callers and a Web site poll as signals that it was time to crank out the carols. "It sways your decision when you know the listeners want it," he said. The oldies station will keep things fresh over the next two months by starting with classics before expanding into newer territory, Stine said ... One station not yet partaking in the holiday ditties is WGER-FM, 106.3, which has played holiday music through the season in past years, launching its Christmas format as early as Nov. 1 in 2007. "WGER has followed its own path this year," said Lauren Davis, program director. "We've forged a new direction free from the myriad of vanilla Christmas choices." That isn't to say the adult-contemporary station on Tittabawassee near Interstate 675 doesn't have a surprise in store, she added. "We are counting our way down to Dec. 1, when we will have something new to announce," Davis said... Need the spirit of the season? Saginaw radio stations have begun holiday programming (Sun, 11/23)
