Grand Rapids Press:

Popular longtime WOOD-AM (1300) radio morning show host Gary Allen is "doing great" at Spectrum Health's Fred and Lena Meijer Heart Center after undergoing successful double-bypass heart surgery Monday morning. "He's a trooper," said Allen's wife, Laurie, noting the radio host was sitting up in bed by late afternoon. "I think that's pretty good that he's talking to me at 4 o'clock after four hours." Allen, 62, has been off the air since Wednesday after experiencing shortness of breath and "chest discomfort" caused by blockage in two arteries, Laurie Allen said. After three hours of surgery, the prognosis for Allen is excellent, she said. Doctors expect four to six weeks of recovery time, though Allen is "planning on three weeks," she said. "He'd love to go back (to WOOD-AM) in three weeks, but we'll see." It's the second time in three years the veteran Grand Rapids radio voice has been off the air after undergoing surgery...
