Cadillac has seen one of the biggest expansions of its FM dial in recent years and it got another new signal last week with the sign on of WCDY-FM 107.9. For now, the station is playing all-Christmas music prior to revealing its permanent format sometime after the holidays. WCDY is owned by Up North Radio, LLC, an independent operator that marked its first sign-on with WCDY. The Class A station operates with 3,100 watts @ 459 feet from a broadcast antenna located southeast of Cadillac and is licensed to McBain. It was granted its construction permit last December.
Other new FM sign-ons in the Cadillac area in recent years include religious WGCP 91.9 and WAIR 104.9 and oldies WKAD 93.7.
WGCP, which began operations in December 2009, is planning on increasing its coverage area to the southwest with its recent agreement to acquire the construction permit for WZMI FM 91.9 Reed City for $7,000. If enough funds are raised, WGCP owner West Central Michigan Media Ministries would apply to the FCC to build new broadcast facilities for WGCP that would allow the station to essentially cover the same areas as WGCP and WZMI combined with only one station. WGCP estimates the total cost for the expansion would be $87,500.
