Rockin' for the Hungry Food and Fund Drive is rollin' to a new location

Help fight hunger where we live! Join ann arbor's 107one, Food Gatherers and Kroger for Washtenaw County's largest outdoor food drive - Rockin' for the Hungry Wednesday, December 1 through Sunday, December 5. Rockin' will be held at a new event location, Kroger at 400 S. Maple Road, and the public can join the festivities by purchasing food or making a cash donation at the register from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday. ann arbor's 107one (WQKL-FM) will be broadcasting live, announcing donations and incentives to help us achieve our 2010 goal of 200 tons of nutritious food.

More than 43,900 people -- including more than 14,000 children and 6,500 seniors--receive emergency food each year through Food Gatherers' network of emergency food pantries and meal sites (Hunger in America, 2010).

"Each year, we're eager to lend a helping hand to our neighbors in need," said Chris Ammel, Program Director, ann arbor's 107one. "Our goal is to simply do our part and help Food Gatherers fight hunger here in Washtenaw County. Stop by and see us as we're "Freezin' For A Reason" at Rockin' For The Hungry."

"Gifts from Rockin' help us provide food to our partners and the hungry people they serve through the winter months," said Eileen Spring, President and CEO for Food Gatherers. "Food drive donations are down 33% compared to last year and we are hoping that with the support of our community, we can help close that gap."

Despite a challenging economy, the community helped Food Gatherers raise a record amount of food for Rockin' last year. This year our goal is to raise 200 tons of food and donations of high protein, canned and dry goods are especially needed. Particular foods include; tuna or other canned fish, soup, stew, chili, corned beef/roast beef hash, beans (kidney, pinto, refried, black, green), rice noodles, peanut butter, baking mixes, baby formula, Ensure/Boost or other nutritional supplement drinks.

"The recession has impacted many Michigan families financially," said Rick Going, president, The Kroger Co of Michigan. "We hope that through the 'Rockin' for the Hungry' event we can help Food Gatherers feed as many of these individuals as possible, especially with the approach of winter."

Financial contributions will also be accepted by Food Gatherers' staff during the event and for the first year matched by the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan - Emergency Food & Shelter Matching Grant. Any new cash gift to Food Gatherers will be matched by 50%. For example, a gift of $100 plus the $50 match will provide enough food for 415 meals. All donations are tax-deductible, and also quality for a State of Michigan tax credit.

During the event all Washtenaw County Kroger store locations will allow customers to donate to Rockin' at the register. In addition to the Maple Road Kroger store, live remote radio broadcasts will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Kroger stores on Stadium, Plymouth Road, Whittaker Road and Carpenter Road.
