Over the years, Bob Kaser has grown accustomed to seeing people associated with the Grand Rapids Griffins be honored by the American Hockey League. Now, it's his turn. Kaser, the Griffins' vice president of community relations and broadcasting, was named this year's recipient of the AHL's James H. Ellery Memorial Award on Wednesday afternoon in the radio category. The award, which honors the AHL's late publicity director, recognizes individuals for their coverage of the league in newspaper, radio and television categories... Anyone who has listened to the Blue Lake Public Radio (BLPR) classical music morning broadcasts at any time during the past 20 years, will immediately recognize that soothing voice and articulate diction of Bonnie Bierma. Bierma's successful broadcasting professional career was not foreseen by this Grand Rapids native as she completed her U of M Bachelor of Music Education degree. Nor was it part of her thinking during three years of teaching beginning band to intermediate school students in Alpena. "When I was laid off during a down economic time, I knew I had to find another path," she says. A critical factor in that other path will be Bierma's professional performances of classical music on the oboe starting in public school, through U of M, and after... 20th anniversary on public airwaves (Fri, 7/2)



On THIS SUNDAY (7/11) from noon to 8p, GRAND RAPIDS CABLE ACCESS CENTER Triple A WYCE/GRAND RAPIDS, MI, will be hosting a live show in support of the AUDUBON NATURE INSTITUTE. The proceeds will go to help the animal victims of the GULF COAST due to the DEEP HORIZON OIL DISASTER via the LOUISIANA MARINE MAMMAL AND SEA TURTLE RESCUE PROGRAM. Red Green is full of well-learned advice from his handyman's school of hard knocks. "Driving really fast on a flat tire does not create enough centrifugal force to make it round again." That's one of several tips the host of "The Red Green Show" shared with a full-house of around 750 at Grand Rapids Civic Theatre Sunday. An enthusiastic audience eagerly scooped up the morsels offered by Green -- actually actor-writer Steve Smith -- host of the sketch comedy series that pokes fun at handymen, DIY and outdoors shows. The program (produced from 1991-2006) still airs on public television stations across the country. West Michigan's WGVU-TV hosted Smith's visit... WGVU-TV along with the Hauenstein Center for Presidential Studies will be airing Michigan's 3rd Congressional District Debate - The Republicans on Wednesday, July 28 at 9:30pm. Candidates that will be present for the Republican Primary Debate will be Bill Hardiman, Steve Heacock, Louise "Ellie" Johnson and Bob Overbeek. Candidates will be discussing issues to the voters in the Michigan's 3rd Congressional District which consists of the counties of Barry, Ionia, and all except the northwest portion of Kent.
