Local radio veteran Sabrina Fairchild has joined the staff at WLHT-FM (95.7) as the station's midday personality from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays. Fairchild, one half of the "Steve and Sabrina" morning duo with Steve Kelly on WOOD-FM (105.7) from 2005 to 2007, also worked on WSNX-FM (104.5) from 1993 to 2005. Wendy Reed, WLHT's former midday personality, can now be heard in the evenings. Fairchild has more than 15 years of radio experience and recently published a book, "Faith and the S.T.O.P. Some still might consider high school athletics a relatively minor market when it comes to television coverage, but a legion of students, parents, alumni, administrators and communities would beg to differ. The Michigan High School Athletic Association is capitalizing on that growing popularity with its burgeoning online productions, which aim to be just as educational to students as they are entertaining to fans.
"It's a niche market in some ways, but it's a broad market in others," MHSAA communications director John Johnson said. "Obviously, there's a great emphasis in the championship events, but with the regular-season stuff, I think there is definitely interest in different parts of the state."
That's not surprising. Through its partnership with When We Were Young Productions and PlayOn! Sports, the MHSAA has produced more than 1,000 hours of programming since 2008. Much of that has aired on Comcast's Channel 900, which is available in about 1 million homes in Michigan, but Johnson said the MHSAA would like to make it bigger by reaching agreements with other cable programmers...
