The 24th Annual Salvation Army Radiothon to benefit the Bed & Bread Club successfully helped generate $1,546,584 in pledges today during a 16-hour event that aired for the first time on news/talk WJR AM 760 Detroit after transitioning from its longtime home at WOMC-FM 104.3.
WJR hosts Paul W. Smith, Frank Beckmann, Mitch Albom, Warren Pierce, John McCollough, Glenn Haege, Steve Courtney, and Ken Brown shared the hosting duties throughout the day, talking about the thousands of people that Salvation Army helps feed and shelter each day in Southeastern Michigan and helping keep the phones ringing and pledges coming in.
As in the previous 23 years when the event was hosted by retired jock Dick Purtan and his crew, the day featured numerous local celebrity visits and call-ins, hourly incentives, and added several special big-ticket incentive items like insider tours of the WJR studios and special access to the debut of Albom's play Ernie.
The evening ended with all of WJR's weekday hosts sharing the hosting simultaneously - a rare treat for fans of the station.
