Michigan Radio wins regional Murrow and National Gabriel awards
Michigan Radio, the public radio service of the University of Michigan, has been recognized with two regional Edward R. Murrow Awards. The Murrow Awards are presented by The Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) to honor outstanding achievements in electronic journalism. Murrow Award recipients demonstrate the spirit of excellence that Edward R. Murrow made a standard for the broadcast news profession.
The station's work won awards in the Audio News Documentary and Audio Feature Reporting categories. Lester Graham, Rebecca Williams, Mark Brush, and Shawn Allee were honored with the Murrow Award for Audio News Documentary with Coal: Dirty Past, Hazy Future. This documentary was an in-depth look at the role coal plays in our lives and its viability as an energy source in the future. Dustin Dwyer's feature "Curling" won for Best Feature Reporting.
Michigan Radio was the only public broadcasting station in the state to be honored with a Murrow Award, as well as one of only two Michigan radio stations of any kind (commercial or public) to win. Michigan Radio competes in Region 7, which consists of stations in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. Regional winners' work will now be entered in the national contest.
"Every year, these awards exemplify the high standard of journalism that Edward R. Murrow set for our industry," said RTDNA Chairman Mark Kraham. "His legacy is more than evident in each of the winning entries, which represent the best work and the best journalists in our field."
Last week, Michigan Radio was also recognized by the Catholic Academy for Communication Arts Professionals with two Gabriel Awards.
