WJR Detroit host Paul W. Smith to be honored as a champion for kids who have lost a parent

Paul W. Smith, morning drive host of News/Talk 760 WJR, will be honored by Yatooma's Foundation For The Kids at the 6th Annual "Champions for the Kids" VIP dinner on June 18, 2011.

Smith will receive the Champion For The Kids Award for his dedicated support of the Foundation. The Award is given annually to an individual who has played a vital role in the continuing success and growth of Yatooma's Foundation For The Kids through steadfast and generous support throughout the prior year. Smith has been a fervent supporter and promoter of the Foundation since its inception in 2003.

"I am honored to help ease the suffering of young children and families who have gone through the unfortunate loss of a parent," said Smith.

Smith's personal and professional involvement with Yatooma's Foundation For The Kids has contributed a critical part to the mission of the Foundation and its success. As the Master of Ceremonies for the annual dinner in recent years, he has played a role in the Champions For The Kids events, as well as the Foundation as a whole.

Founder and president Norman Yatooma began Yatooma's Foundation For The Kids to assist families in rebuilding their lives after the painful loss of a parent. Yatooma started the Foundation in memory of his father, ten years after he was tragically murdered in 1993.

"I know how hard it is to get back on your feet after the world you know is taken from you in a moment," Yatooma said. "Our Foundation was started to show children in this situation that there are people who care and will be their heroes when they need them the most. For this year's award, we can think of no one better qualified as a hero than Paul W. Smith's support has played a part in the nearly $2.5 million the Foundation has raised with its signature fundraiser, Champions For The Kids, over the last five years."

The Champions for the Kids dinner/auction & golf tournament is a special two-day event. The dinner will take place on June 18 at the Townsend Hotel starting at 5 p.m. with music provided by the Simone Vitale Band. The Golf Tournament will begin with breakfast and a live broadcast by News/Talk 760 WJR on June 20 at 7 a.m. on the legendary South Course at the Oakland Hills Country Club. Toledo rocker WIOT rallying Michigan listeners to fight interference on 104.7

With the recent sign-on of Radio Power's FM translator of WGPR-HD3 on 104.7, regular listeners of Toledo legacy rocker WIOT-FM have been complaining of interference from the translator as WIOT also operates at 104.7 and had been easily receivable in areas south and west of downtown Detroit for many years.

WIOT recently posted a web form on it's web site, wiot.com, soliciting reports of interference from listeners so the station can "resolve the interference issue caused by the interfering signal through the normal government channels".
