Michigan Radio honored with diversity award for series on Muslims in Michigan

Michigan Radio has been recognized by the Radio Television Digital News Association and UNITY: Journalists of Color with a 2011 RTDNA/UNITY award for the "Muslims in Michigan" series. The RTDNA/UNITY Award honors outstanding television, radio and online journalism focused on diversity.

Presented since 1999, the purpose of the award is to encourage and showcase journalistic excellence in covering issues of race and ethnicity. It is presented annually to news organizations nationwide that show an ongoing commitment to covering the diversity of the communities they serve. Michigan Radio was one of only three radio organizations in the country to receive a RTDNA/UNITY award, honoring its "Muslims in America" project. The Takeway (co-produced by WNYC Radio and Public Radio International) was awarded for their entry, "Fluid Identities," as was WJBC in Bloomington-Normal, Illinois for its "WJBC en Espanol" entry.

"These winners set a very high standard for diversity coverage with their entries," said RTDNA chairman Mark Kraham. "We commend them for their extraordinary journalism and encourage all newsrooms to emulate their efforts."

The "Muslims in Michigan" project was formed out a partnership between Michigan Radio and the University of Michigan Center for Middle Eastern and North African Studies. This five part radio series, which first aired in 2010, examined life for Muslim people living in Michigan. Beyond religion, the series focused on the cultural, political, ethnic, and social lives of this diverse group, including reports on sharia law, the construction of a new mosque in Grand Rapids, and profiles of individuals who had recently converted to Islam. The project also featured film events, speakers, and community conversations on the subject in Ann Arbor, Dearborn and Grand Rapids. More information on that series can be found at: muslimsinmichigan.org.

Three summers ago, Matt Waymire left his job at WICZ TV and followed his fiancée to Michigan. A leap of faith for someone who did not have another television job lined up. As luck would have it, we had an immediate opening around the time Matt moved to Michigan, and the rest as they say 'is history'.

Full story: End of an era as Waymire signs off at NBC25 (Wed, 6/28)
