Every great team needs a guy who has a bit of Hollywood about him. Jim Northrup, though, wasn't Robert Redford. He was Joe Pesci. He was Harvey Keitel. He was Steve Buscemi. Mickey Lolich got the word Wednesday evening his old Tigers teammate, the "Gray Fox" as they called him, had died at age 71 after suffering a seizure at a Grand Blanc assisted living facility ... his career as a Tigers television announcer. It ended in 1995, and no one had to explain why Northrup was unceremoniously yanked. He was blunt, unapologetically so.

Jim Northrup died today. And those of us who were kids during that magical summer of 1968 in Detroit also bade farewell to another piece of our childhood. Before everyone attached succinct titles to the bookmarks of our sports history like The Drive, The Catch or in the case of Jim Joyce spoiling Armando Galarraga's perfect game here a year ago, The Blown Call, Northrup had The Triple.
