Specs Howard School Inaugurates "Media Mayhem" Series




Summer workshops to offer unique glimpse into wide-ranging media arts careers

Individuals considering a career change or new opportunities in the diverse world of media arts can experience all that the field has to offer as Specs Howard School of Media Arts launches its summer "Media Mayhem" workshop series, Thursday nights in June. All sessions are free and open to the public and held at Specs Howard's campuses in Farmington Hills and Southfield.

Led by faculty, each workshop will also feature a special guest appearance by some of the media industry's most successful professionals including writer illustrator B.K. Taylor (Walt Disney Animations; Jim Henson Productions; Mad Magazine) and popular 89X Morning radio hosts Dave & Chuck "The Freak." Sessions will focus on practical, hands-on activities that will allow participants to explore illustration and design, radio, commercial production and newscasting, respectively.

Comic Strip + Flash Animation: Thursday, June 2, 2011, 2 - 5 PM, Southfield, 19900 W. 9 Mile Rd- A fun and comprehensive introduction to graphic design will include creatively employing various tools of the trade including: Adobe Creative Suite®, Photoshop®, creating vector art in Illustrator®, a comic strip in InDesign®, and an animation morph in Flash®. Special Guest: Well-known illustrator and writer B.K. Taylor will kick-off the workshop with a brief overview and discussion about his career. Taylor has contributed to National Lampoon, Walt Disney Animations, Jim Henson Productions, Mad Magazine, Scholastic, Nickelodeon and ABC's Home Improvement.

Radio Production & Voice Over: Thursday, June 9, 2011, 2 - 5 PM, Southfield, 19900 W. 9 Mile Rd- Participants will journey into the studio and behind the microphone to experience the world of radio, including creating, producing and voicing a promotional announcement. Special Guests: Dave & Chuck "The Freak," hosts of the popular Morning X show on 89X, will kick-off the workshop with a brief overview and discussion about theirexperiences working in radio. In recent years, Dave & Chuck have enjoyed in a surge in popularity and were awarded Detroit's best morning show in 2010 by Metromix readers.

Sound Stage Commercial Shoot: Thursday, June 16, 2011, 2 - 5 PM, Farmington Hills, 23689 Industrial Park Dr.- Attendees will use professional audio/video recording and editing equipment to shoot a public service announcement/commercial at Grace & Wild Studios' B stage, and take home a copy of the finished commercial. Special Guest: Nicole Finateri is an assistant editor at STS-Griot, a division of Grace & Wild located in Ferndale, where she has recently contributed to commercials for Jeep, Ford, and the US Navy. Nicole will kick-off the workshop with a briefoverview and discussion about her career.

Live Television News Broadcast: Thursday, June 23, 2011, 2 - 5 PM, Southfield, 19900 W. 9 Mile Rd- Session participants will aid in producing a live broadcast from both sides of the camera, taking advantage of teleprompters, green screens and the expertise of Specs' staff guidance. TV news anchor/guest speaker to be determined.

New Media Seminar: Thursday, June 30, 2011, 2 - 5 PM, Southfield, 19900 W. 9 Mile Rd- Take an in-depth look at how technology is changing media and creating new opportunities for content creators. Topics will include podcasting, internet radio, social media and the explosion of online video content (youtube, vimeo, etc.). Special Guests: Lori Lewis is the digital and social media strategist for Jacobs Media, the largest radio consulting firm in the United States specializing in Rock formats. The company, formed in 1983 by Fred Jacobs, created the Classic Rock format, and has been a leading force in Alternative and Mainstream Rock. Currently, Jacobs Media services are used by nearly every major broadcasting company, including CBS, Entercom, Emmis, Cox, Greater Media, Citadel, Journal, and others. Lori will kick-off this workshop with a brief overview of current and future trends in the media.
