Detroit's WDVD FM and FOX 2 teaming up for Operation Backpack
For the third consecutive year, 96.3 WDVD is teaming up with FOX 2 Detroit and Volunteers of America Michigan to stuff school buses full of new backpacks and school supplies. For most children, going back to school means new pencils, notebooks and backpacks - everything they need to start the school year off right, but back-to-school shopping is not a given for kids who come from low-income families.
More than 900,000 kids in Michigan come from low-income families. Many local children will head back to school without basic supplies. Studies suggest that students who lack basic school supplies experience lower test scores and attendance issues. Being prepared for school boosts a child's self esteem and helps his/her performance.
The goal of the drive is to collect 1500 backpacks to local children in need.
Operation Backpack will be taking place at three locations: Direct Optical in Canton on Ford Road, Metro PCS on Eureka Road in Taylor and Lakeside Mall in Sterling Heights on Hall Road on Friday, August 5th from 5:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, August 6th & Sunday, August 7th from 9:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.
