Another awful day at Clear Channel affects Detroit market...

It's become an annual (or even more regular) event at Clear Channel's radio stations across the country - mass layoffs that affect people in markets from coast to coast.

Another wave hit today, and apparently there have been a number of people that were let go from some of Clear Channel's seven stations in the Detroit market. Names that have been reported in various trade publications, on social networks, and on message boards include Russ McNamara and Tom 'The Gov' Millikan from WDFN AM 1130, Joe Rosati from WQKI-FM 95.5, O'Neill Stevens from WMXD-FM 92.3, and Dr. Darrius from WJLB-FM 97.9. There are others as well, many of them hard working people behind the scenes that unfortunately will be making phone calls to MARVIN soon.

... and Grand Rapids too

Clear Channel's operations in West Michigan apparently weren't entirely spared from the cutbacks either. Only the name of ESPN 96.1 producer/host Ryan Terpstra has been identified thus far, but as is the case in Detroit there are likely others that received bad news about their jobs today.

Smile FM expansion in southeast Michigan continues

A slice of eastern Macomb and southern St. Clair counties are the newest areas served by Contemporary Christian Smile FM with this week's sign on of WVMV FM 91.5 China Township. The new station's antenna is located between New Baltimore and Algonac.

The Smile FM network added service in the downriver area of Metro Detroit with the sign on of WDTP FM 89.5 last summer and is heard across many other areas of the state.

WXYZ-TV, WDET-FM to air this evening's Town Hall with Governor Snyder and Deputy Detroit Mayor Kirk Lewis

Michigan Governor Rick Snyder and Detroit Deputy Mayor Kirk Lewis, filling in for Mayor Dave Bing, will meet face-to-face to tackle the issue of Detroit's financial future on a special Detroit 2020 live interactive town hall meeting on Thursday, March 29th, from 7-8 p.m. on WXYZ-TV Channel 7 and simulcast on WDET-FM 101.9. The special, "The Challenge of Change," will allow viewers to engage in the conversation through social media, and ask questions of the Governor and Deputy Mayor on Facebook, Twitter and on-line.

This special comes at a critical time for Detroit, as city and state officials continue to debate plans for the financially troubled city that could include the appointment of an emergency manager. "The Challenge of Change," will offer a live forum for viewers to participate in a dialogue about the fiscal challenges facing the city.

"We believe it's an important service to our viewers to allow them to engage in an important discussion that will ultimately have a dramatic impact on their lives and the future of their city," said WXYZ Vice-President and General Manager Ed Fernandez. "This show is part of our ongoing commitment through Detroit 2020 to take action for our viewers on-air, on-line and on mobile platforms."

"The Challenge of Change" will be hosted by 7 Action News anchors Stephen Clark and Carolyn Clifford, with reports from Diana Lewis, JoAnne Purtan, and Dave LewAllen.
