LA's Shotgun Tom Kelly getting Star treatment
Art Vuolo checks in with the following item of interest for the many friends Shotgun Tom has in Michigan:
"Shotgun Tom" Kelly attended the last two Detroit Radio Reunion's even through he never worked at a local station. He did it as a favor to me (Art Vuolo) because that's the kind of guy he is.
Tom will celebrate 15 years at LA's KRTH (K-Earth 101) in 2013 so it somehow seems fitting that is when he will receive his very own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame!
He got the nod to do afternoon drive at the station after the untimely passing of The Real Don Steele in 1997, who also has a star. Kelly never says he replaced Steele, but rather that he succeeded Don because "no one could replace a radio legend like the Real Don Steele." The exact location of the star and date of the ceremony will be announced soon. Kelly would probably like it to be near the Don Steele star.
No doubt, Shotgun Tom is a major ambassador for K-Earth 101 (sister station to Detroit's WOMC 104.3 FM) as he plugs the station wherever he goes in his signature Smokey the Bear-style ranger hat. Whether it's his regular visits to Cantor's on Fairfax, most Wednesday nights, or one of his many personal appearances for countless charities and philanthropic events, the Shotgun is a truly a beloved radio personality, similar to Detroit's Dick Purtan. Most of his radio colleagues have proclaimed him "one of the nicest people in our business."
Kudos to a man who deserves it all...Shotgun Tom Kelly!
