Michigan State's WKAR-FM/AM hires Peter Whorf as station manager

Michigan State University announced today that Peter Whorf will join WKAR-FM/AM 90.5/870 East Lansing as radio station manager for the public broadcasting stations on Aug. 27.

Whorf comes to WKAR from WFMT in Chicago, where he has served as program director and vice president for content for the past seven years.

Whorf's broadcasting experience includes serving as program director at WNYC in New York and KBIA in Columbia, Mo. Whorf also worked at WBEZ in Chicago, where he managed news and talk programming.

"Peter Whorf will be a great asset to our WKAR radio stations," said Gary Reid, WKAR general manager. "His incredible background in music programming, uniquely combined with radio news-talk experience, will make him a great addition to our WKAR family."

"We are excited to have Peter Whorf join WKAR and the Michigan State University College of Communication Arts and Sciences leadership team," said Dean Pamela Whitten. "I am confident Whorf will provide the vision and leadership to elevate WKAR's radio stations to new heights of quality programming and innovation."

Whorf earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y.

The CBS affiliate in Flint and Saginaw mistakenly ran Pete Hoekstra's controversial Super Bowl commercial - attacked for claims of xenophobia in February - at least two times Tuesday morning, campaign spokesman Greg VanWoerkom said today.

Crawford County Avalanche:

After two dozen years in the radio business, William Gannon has initiated the process to sign off the air. Gannon Broadcasting has agreed to sell the stations County Y100, WGRY-AM 1230 Greatest Music Ever and Decades 101.1 WQON-FM to Sheryl and Jerry Coyne, the co-owners of Blarney Stone Broadcasting Inc. Gannon, who suffered a stroke on July 25, 2011, said getting out of the business for his personal health and pursuing his other business interests were the reasons for the sale.

Jackson Citizen-Patriot:

"Buzz TV" is changing stations. After three episodes on WLAJ 53, one of which ran twice due to technical difficulties, the Jackson-based variety show is moving to WHTV 18. The show will now air in the 12:30 a.m. time slot on Friday nights. An announcement that "Buzz TV" was leaving WLAJ came on Facebook on July 13.

Fine Tuning:

  • Rob Stone has been named to evenings (7 p.m. - midnight) at CBS' Country WYCD-FM 99.5. He starts on Monday, July 30.

  • Jake Kelly exits nights at Midwestern Broadcasting Contemporary Hits WJZQ-FM 92.9 Cadillac/Traverse City to move to afternoons at WIXX-FM Green Bay, WI.

  • Non-commercial Contemporary Christian 'The Fuse' WPRJ-FM 101.7 Coleman (Clare/Midland/Mt. Pleasant area) has been sold by Partnership Ministries to Spirit Communications along with an FM translator at 96.7 in Alma for $100,000.

  • Tribune has extended its affiliation agreement with FOX, assuring Grand Rapids' WXMI-TV Ch. 17 will remain with the network for at least the next several years.

The CBS game show "The Price Is Right" is searching for contestants in Detroit. Channel 62 is proud to host the only contestant search event in Michigan in Westland.

Fine Tuning:

  • Kettering University Low Power FM station WKUF-LP 94.3 Flint has been off the air because of storm damage the station suffered last week. Repairs are anticipated to completed over the course of the next several days.

  • Ludington's WKLA-FM 106.3 recently repositioned to 'Hits 106 KLA' from '106.3 KLA; The Lake Shores' Hit Music Station'. The station's format remains Pop / Hot Adult Contemporary.
