Fine Tuning:

  • The competition over sports radio listeners on FM in Detroit will be amped up a bit starting on Friday evening when both WXYT-FM 97.1 and WMGC-FM 105.1 will air play-by-play of the Detroit Tigers - Oakland A's American League Divisional Series.

WXYT is of course the flagship of the Tigers' radio network and will be offering the familiar voices of Dan Dickerson and Jim Price calling the game. Thanks to its affiliation with ESPN Radio, WMGC-FM will be carrying the games from ESPN Radio.

A similar situation existed last season as well when then ESPN-affiliate WCAR AM 1090 carried the games from ESPN Radio - however that station's signal is severely limited in the metro area at night when the games aired.
  •

  • The September ratings from Nielsen Audio were released today and they reflect the first full month of WMGC with its new Sports format. Among all listeners, WMGC carded a 0.6 - way below the 7.8 put up by WXYT-FM. WXYT's number improved from August, up from 7.2 in August and just below Country WYCD-FM which was first overall with a 7.9.

Sports Business Journal:

MLB saw its largest local ratings gains in its smallest markets this season. Six of the league's eight smallest TV markets posted double-digit ratings jumps this year. On the flip side, the poor on-field performance of many of the league's big-market teams led to ratings declines, with numbers down sharply in four of MLB's five biggest TV markets ... The Detroit Tigers were the top-rated team for a second year in a row. The Tigers averaged a 9.60 rating on FS Detroit during their run to the postseason.

But you probably don't know about the butterscotch candies, and that's important to him. That's about respecting the audience.
