The fireworks started on Friday as Radio Ink's Eric Rhoads ran a controversial blog post and emailed it to his database - "A Cold, Harsh Reality For Radio." It's all about the "connected car" and Eric's "intervention" at last week's Convergence panel that dealt head-on with this issue. Below, I've linked Eric's post, and then followed it up with my response ... And my response: Eric, you must have had a Venti Bold from Starbucks Friday morning. I applaud you for raising an issue that Jacobs Media has emphasized for the past two years - the "connected car" - starting with our annual treks to the Consumer Electronics Show.

Bloomfield Hills' WBFH takes home top High School Radio Station award

Bloomfield Hills School District radio broadcasting students won seven first place awards, four second place awards and six third place awards from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters Foundation (MABF) at their annual Great Lakes Broadcasting Conference held March 13, 2013 at the Lansing Center in Lansing.

The MABF received 625 entries from 33 schools for their annual High School and College Broadcasting Awards competition. WBFH students won 17 of the 27 awards given out in the high school radio division.

Based on the number of awards won, WBFH was named the 2013 High School Station of the Year, the eighth time in the last eleven years the station has won that honor.

Individual award winners included:

  • Andover seniors Eric Bloom (six awards), Bryan Furlong (four), Bryan Brown and Danny Harwood (two each), Tyler Kieft, Adam Kurtagh, Ben Beltser, Alexander Madias, and Marcus Boyd (one each)
  • Lahser seniors Sean Shepard (four) and Michael Blumenthal (three)
  • Andover juniors Winston Parker (three), Mark Stewart (two), and Dylan Deitch (one)
  • Andover sophomores Brock Appleby (two) and Jaron Kirshenbaum (one)

The WBFH management team of Station Manager Pete Bowers and Assistant Manager/Technical Director Ron Wittebols were present to congratulate the award winning students. "I'm so proud of all the Biff students who won awards, especially those who won for the first time", said Bowers.

WBFH, also known as The Biff, is a non-commercial, educational radio station broadcasting at 88.1 on the FM dial or online at www.wbfh.fm.

 


 

Cumulus' News/Talk WJR AM 760 and Scripps Media's WXYZ-TV Ch. 7 nab Station of the Year awards for Detroit market

In radio, WJR received eleven 2012 Broadcast Excellence Awards honors in total from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters including WJR's sixth consecutive Station of the Year Award, and its eleventh since the year 2000.

WXYZ-TV won it's third consecutive Station of the Year Award and claimed fourteen awards overall.

Grand Rapids Press:

WOOD-TV 8 has been named 2012 Television Station of the Year by the Michigan Association of Broadcasters, the 10th time in 12 years the station has received the top honor. WZZM-TV 13 and WXMI-TV 17 also were honored among West Michigan's commercial TV stations, and WGVU-TV 35/52 took home several awards among all Michigan's public TV stations at the MAB's annual Broadcast Excellence Awards, held Wednesday in Lansing.

  • Digital low power religious TV station WDWO-CD Ch. 18 Detroit has been sold by TCT Ministries to LocusPoint Networks for $4 million, pending FCC approval and closing. According the apparent web site for LocusPoint Netowrks, the buyer is "an early stage wireless communications company".

  • The Huge Show will be returning to the lineup at Sports WLUN-FM 100.9 Pinconning/Midland starting Monday, March 14th. The show will air on a tape-delayed basis from 6 - 8 p.m., except when preempted by play-by-play coverage.

    "Bringing The Huge Show back to our station enhances the listening experience for our audience," said Great Lakes Loons President and General Manager Paul Barbeau, who also oversees ESPN 100.9-FM. "With Crunch Time and The HUGE Show airing back-to-back, our listeners can now enjoy more quality Michigan-based sports talk radio."

Christian radio personalities Chris and Emilee's disappearance from WJQK-FM this week left fans dismayed. But the hosts of "The Chris & Emilee" Show, formerly heard on JQ99 in Holland/Zeeland, promise they have something to announce next week after Easter Sunday.

Michigan's representation in Washington wants to know how the FCC will work with Canada and Mexico on the pending TV spectrum incentive auction. In a letter to the FCC, Michigan's 14 members of the House of Representatives and two Senators said coordinating the auction with Canada and Mexico will "preserve opportunities for broadcasting," as well as maximize the amount of nationwide spectrum to meet the nation's demand for licensed mobile wireless broadband.

Finalists were announced Thursday in the Michigan Associated Press Media Editors 2012 newspaper competition. The awards in actual order of finish -- first, second and third places -- will be announced at the annual Michigan APME awards banquet June 1 in Lansing.
