It's a sad day for the radio industry. Radio's number one ambassador has passed away at the age of 85. Burton died as a result of head injuries suffered from a fall at home on Tuesday. Bill Burton will be missed by too many people to count and by an entire industry that appreciated him as its number one cheerleader.

The passing of Bill Bonds marks the death of the last surviving member of what you might call the Motor City Media Rat Pack. Once upon a time, Bill Bonds, J.P. McCarthy and Bob Talbert ruled the conversation in this town.

WWMT Newschannel 3 sports director Ed Kengerski will be leaving the West Michigan area after nearly 20 years with the Kalamazoo television station. Kengerski will be leaving CBS-affiliate WWMT after accepting a video sports reporter position with the University of Michigan, where he will focus on covering football, basketball and ice hockey, Kengerski said.

DENISE BOHN-STEWART is returning to MID-WEST FAMILY BROADCASTING Hot AC WCXT (98.3 THE COAST)/ST. JOSEPH-BENTON HARBOR, MI to host mornings with JONNY REINHARDT, beginning JANUARY 5th. BOHN-STEWART served as News Director for the MID-WEST FAMILY SOUTHWEST MICHIGAN cluster and morning show co-host on Country WYTZ (97.5 Y-COUNTRY) before moving to TV at CBS affiliate WSBT-TV/SOUTH BEND and also working with the SUSAN G. KOMEN FOUNDATION in SOUTHWEST MICHIGAN. Meanwhile, former morning host ZACK EAST moves back to handle noon-5p, and REINHARDT, who rejoined the cluster in OCTOBER, will co-host 6-9a with BOHN-STEWART and go solo 9a-noon. STEPH WILLIAMS remains on board to handle 5-10p.

Fine Tuning:

  • Brad Golder, the radio broadcast voice of the Midland-based Great Lakes Loons minor league baseball team since the team's inception, is stepping down as the team's play-by-play announcer to pursue other opportunities. Golder will continue with the Loons and ESPN 100.9-FM (WLUN-FM 100.9 Pinconning) through the end of February to finish out the basketball season and to assist in the transition to his replacement.

Les Root, who spent more than a half century broadcasting news in the Flint area with a signature tenor and rhythm, has died five years after signing off the air for the final time. Root, 75, of Fenton, died Monday, Dec. 8, after a brief illness, his wife, Maxine, said Tuesday, Dec. 9. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, and 11 a.m. until noon Friday, Dec. 12, at Sharp Funeral Homes -- Fenton Chapel, 1000 Silver Lake Road, Fenton.

  • Cumulus Media/Detroit News-Talk WJR AM 760 welcomes back its annual Christmas Sing to downtown Detroit. The event this year has moved from suburban Troy to Campus Martius Park and will take place on Friday, December 12th with events starting at 5 p.m.

    WJR morning host and event emcee Paul W. Smith commented, "Our WJR Christmas Sing started 49 years ago in Detroit, and I'm thrilled that we are celebrating this year's fun again right in the heart of the City at Campus Martius Park."

After a pair of extensions, CBS has set Thursday night as the retransmission-consent Rubicon before its properties go dark on Dish. The broadcaster's deal for its own-and-operated stations, as well as premium service Showtime Networks and national cable sports channel CBS Sports Network, initially expired on Nov. 20, but have remained available to the No. 2 DBS provider's subscribers via a pair of short-term extensions.

Over the weekend, viewers of Lansing, Mich. NBC affiliate WILX learned two anchors were leaving the station on back-to-back days. Sunday morning, Anthony Sabella said goodbye on-air, telling viewers he was moving to Flint to work at ABC affiliate WJRT as a reporter.

  • Religious WRVM-FM (102.7 Suring, WI) has expanded its coverage with the sign-on of its recently acquired 88.5 FM Sturgeon Bay, WI. The station, using the new call sign WPVM, rebroadcasts the programming of WRVM at 15,000 watts from Wisconsin's Door Peninsula northeast of the city of Green Bay; both WRVM and WPVM can be heard in parts of upper Michigan.

 


 

ESPN 100.9 Midland brings back Saginaw Valley League basketball coverage

WLUN-FM 100.9 Pinconning/Midland, ESPN 100.9-FM, moves from football to basketball season and has unveiled its Saginaw Valley League boys and girls basketball coverage package for the 2014-15 season. Coverage will include more than 20 live broadcasts of SVL games, including top local rivalries such as Midland vs. Midland Dow and Saginaw High vs. Saginaw Arthur Hill. Coverage will continue into the postseason with Michigan High School Athletic Association tournament action.

Coverage begins on Friday, Dec. 12 when Midland High travels to Mt. Pleasant for a girls/boys doubleheader. The broadcast will begin at 6 p.m. The ESPN 100.9-FM game coverage schedule will be announced throughout the 2014-15 season.

Broadcasters will include Brad Golder, Matt DeVries, Jim Costa, Matt Kearney, Jake Riepma and Brad Tunney. Golder is the play-by-play announcer for the Great Lakes Loons and SVSU men's and women's basketball. DeVries is the program director for ESPN 100.9-FM and hosted SVL football coverage in 2014 and was a part of SVL basketball coverage on ESPN 100.9-FM in 2013-14. Costa, Kearney and Tunney have all been part of Central Michigan University athletic broadcasts, while Riepma has broadcast Northwood men's and women's basketball and spent time on Loons broadcasts in 2014.

FOX 17 anchor Tim Doty is leaving West Michigan for central Indiana. Doty, a 13-year veteran of WXMI-TV in Grand Rapids, is joining WTTV-TV in Indianapolis in January.

A local newscast is about to lose a familiar face. Jason Colthorp, evening anchor at WILX News 10, has been named anchor and reporter at WDIV, the NBC affiliate in Detroit, according to an announcement by Michael King, vice president and general manager of WILX Media.
