About 10 years ago, I directed the musical "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" at the Midland Center for the Arts. The show features a very prominent, but offstage, "narrator" role, which means you need someone with a great voice, perhaps even one that's quickly recognizable, to play the part.

I've never seen so many potholes in my life as I'm seeing on the roads around my house. And it's a subject everybody's talking about. In Michigan, WXYZ, the ABC affiliate in Detroit, is getting city officials to fix the potholes that residents report in 48-72 hours.

WFGR-FM has a new morning man on Classic Hits 98.7. Michigan native Jojo Girard was on the air this morning, spinning songs such as "Just What I Needed" by the Cars and "Cold as Ice" by Foreigner, for the debut of "The Jojo Show."

A new Detroit City Council report raises questions about the reasoning behind a proposed $5.2-million payment -- negotiated by the emergency manager's team of Jones Day lawyers -- that would settle any claims the city has to a share of the Red Wings' past cable TV revenues.

Central Michigan Life:

Central Michigan University's 24-hour cable outlet has been named college television station of the year by the Michigan Association of Broadcasters for the 13th consecutive year. Peter Orlik, the director of the School of Broadcast and Cinematic Arts, said this is a victory for the school and the station because of the competition this year.

Flint Journal:

There's no Ron Burgundy behind the anchor desk, but Davison High School is building a broadcast dynasty with compelling and rich news stories for students and residents. Davison High School's DTV, a student-run station has received the 2013 High School Television Station/Program of the Year award from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters, its fourth time being honored with the award since 2009.

Detroit Tigers / MLB.com:

Every game on the Detroit Tigers' much-anticipated 2014 regular-season schedule will be televised, including 150 originated by FOX Sports Detroit, five games on FOX Sports 1 and three selected for the FOX Saturday Baseball Game of the Week. Four games are on ESPN.

A mega-merger/buyout in TV to affect Michigan stations

Media General, owner of CBS affiliate WLNS-TV Ch. 6 and ABC affiliate WLAJ-TV Ch. 53 in the Lansing market, will buyout LIN Media, owner of NBC affiliate WOOD-TV Ch. 8, ABC affiliate WOTV-TV Ch. 41, and low power MyNetwork affiliate WXSP-CD Ch. 15 in the Grand Rapids/Kalamazoo/Battle Creek market in a deal valued at $1.6 billion.

The transaction, once approved and closed, would create the second largest pure-play TV company in the country.

Philip Nye, former news director at Keener 13 and WXYZ-TV Ch. 7 Detroit dies

Nye helped direct the news department at WKNR AM 1310 during that station's popularity peak in the 1960s and later was a driving force at building the news department at Channel 7 into a market leader in the 1970s. Services will be held Monday, March 24 in Farmington Hills.

More details on Nye's career and his memorial in this obituary. He was 87 years old when he died on March 20th, 2014.

MIDWEST COMMUNICATIONS has hired PATRICK PENDERGAST as VP/GM for their four station cluster in LANSING, MI. He will assume duties as of MARCH 24th. This is a homecoming of sorts as PENDERGAST ran MIDWEST COMMUNICATIONS four station cluster in SHEBOYGAN, WI in 2006-2007.

Nexstar Broadcasting Group announced today that its CBS affiliate WJMN Marquette, Mich. (DMA 180), will launch two weekday newscasts beginning in April. Branded as "Local 3," the newscasts will air Monday through Friday at 6 and 11 p.m. in full HD. Local 3 News will originate from a new, state-of-the-art broadcast facility currently under construction just west of Marquette, in what will become WJMN-TV Plaza.

The Wayne County prosecutor has declined to file charges against journalist Charlie LeDuff for his involvement in a 2013 brawl during the St. Patrick's Day Parade.

Michael Patrick Shiels will broadcast his syndicated morning radio and television show live from Ireland on St. Patrick's Day. "Michigan's Big Show starring Michael Patrick Shiels" will originate Monday from the Dromoland Castle Hotel and Country Estate, in County Clare, near Shannon.

Parker and The Man are back on the radio, according to a news release. Longtime radio partners Rob Parker and Mark Wilson will reboot "Sports Night with Parker and The Man" from 7-10 weeknights on WDFN-AM (1130), starting March 24.

Radio One/Detroit hosting Radiothon to help fire victims

The stations of Radio One in Detroit (Adult Urban WDMK-FM 105.9, News/Talk WCHB AM 1200/FM 99.9, Gospel WPZR-FM 102.7, and Urban WGPR-FM 107.5) have teamed up with St. Vincent de Paul to help the victims of the recent Jason Manor Apartment fire by hosting a Radiothon today to raise funds to help the displaced residents of the destroyed building. WDMK, WCHB and WGPR will be broadcasting live from the Villa store on Telegraph and West Chicago in Redford Township at various times throughout the day with WDMK's broadcasting ending at 10 p.m.

Crain's Detroit Business:

With a different business plan behind the scenes, local sports talk show "Parker and The Man" will return to local radio airwaves weeknights beginning March 24 on WDFN 1130 AM. Hosts Rob Parker and Mark Wilson, who began the show on the station in 1998 before it moved to other stations, will be on from 7 to 10 p.m.

  • Gannett ABC affiliate WZZM-TV Ch. 13 Grand Rapids has named Taz Painter as the station's News Director, effective April 14th. Painter will transfer from Gannett sister station WBIR-TV Knoxville, TN and take the role held by Stanton Tang who's departure had previously been announced.

ENVISION NETWORKS is now distributing MOJO IN THE MORNING, the morning show from WKQI/DETROIT where "imperfect people laugh about life and themselves." Nielsen Audio (formerly Arbitron) - which measures audience ratings in radio - recently released numbers for the fall 2013 survey period in the Ann Arbor market, and once again, Michigan Radio (WUOM-FM) established itself as the area's most-listened-to radio station. The results come after a two year hiatus, during which time Ann Arbor was not included in the ratings.

Two of Schurz Communications stations in South Bend, IN are sporting new names and slightly revamped formats. Country "Real Country 99.9" WHFB-FM Benton Harbor, MI has tweaked to a current based presentation as "New Country 99.9" focusing on 18-34. The station retains the syndicated Bob & Tom Show in mornings.
