A big change has been announced for University of Michigan play-by-play. The U-M Athletic Department announced Thursday that college and NFL Hall of Fame player and broadcaster Dan Dierdorf will be joining Jim Brandstatter in the radio booth for University of Michigan football broadcasts on the Michigan IMG Radio Network beginning this fall.

Fine Tuning:

  • According to the Denver Post, NBC affiliate WILX-TV Ch. 10 Lansing will add Kirk Montgomery as an anchor, reportedly for a new 4 p.m newscast. Montgomery moves to Lansing from KUSA-TV in Denver where he was working as an entertainment reporter.

 


 

Detroit News:

Dan Dierdorf, the NFL Hall of Famer and former Michigan All-American offensive lineman, had spoken many times about his desire to someday call a few series of a Wolverines game from the radio booth with his old teammate, Jim Brandstatter. He'll be doing more than that.

When Michigan announced last summer that Frank Beckmann would retire from doing radio play-by-play for football games, most thoughts about successors were conventional. But as with many decisions by U-M athletic department, today's announcement was anything but.

Detroit Public Television WTVS (Channel 56) is outsourcing its programming to the Florida firm Public Television Programming, replacing programming director Dan Gaitens and assistant programming director Joann Havel, who were let go several weeks ago. DPTV CEO Rich Homberg stresses the move is part of a restructuring at the station, not cutbacks.

Michigan's new play-by-play announcer will be "familiar" to the public and will already know the words to "The Victors." The announcement of the new radio voice will be made soon by business partner IMG, perhaps even this week, according to Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon. IMG hires the announcers.

Michigan will have a new football announcer soon, possibly as soon as this week. Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon said today that it will be a familiar name with Michigan ties, speaking after a WWJ-AM Business of Sports luncheon at Ford Field.

Taz Painter, WZZM-TV 13's new news director, is on the job today. Painter takes over the Gannett-owned ABC-TV affiliate serving the Grand Rapids-Kalamazoo-Battle Creek TV market in West Michigan.

  • Robby Bridges has been named as Program Director and afternoon host for Cumulus Media/Detroit Country WDRQ-FM 93.1 (Nash FM). Bridges moves the Motor City from Bridgeport, CT where he'd been leading an Adult Contemporary station.

    Bridges said via a release, "I'd like to thank our EVP/co-COO John Dickey, SVP/programming Mike McVay, SVP/programming Jan Jeffries and our Detroit market manager Scott Meier for this incredible opportunity to program the Motor City's new country music leader 'NASH FM 93.1.' M.L. Elrick, reporter for Detroit FOX owned station WJBK told Detroit Metro Times what he really thinks about the Pulitzer he won when he worked for the Detroit Free Press. Elrick won the award in 2009 along with Jim Schaefer, who still works at the paper, for a piece about former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick.

Detroit Free Press:

Two 18-year-old Wayne State University students have been charged in the theft of more than $42,000 in checks payable to a radio station. The Wayne County sheriff's office says Samuel Cooper and Eric Perez were arraigned Thursday on two counts each of larceny from a building. The 12 checks from various companies were made payable to WDET-FM and taken Monday from a dorm room on the school's Detroit campus.

While Bob Goodrich plots a campaign message and reach to beat U.S. Rep. Justin Amash in a right-leaning district, he's still aiming to become an official Democratic candidate. Goodrich, the 73-year-old owner and president of Goodrich Quality Theaters, is working to meet a basic requirement to run for office and has been in the process of collecting at least 1,000 signatures needed by law.

The University of Windsor's campus radio station will be reaching more listeners with a signal increase approved by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission. CJAM 99.1FM applied for the power boost in March 2012 after CKXS-FM in Wallaceburg, which uses the same frequency, put in a request. Following the installation - expected sometime in the summer - CJAM will increase from 456 to 2,084 watts and reach up to the north and northeast to Grosse Point, Mich.
