Fine Tuning:

  • Big changes in Alpena as Midwestern Broadcasting signs off News-Talk WATZ AM 1450 for the final time, moving the station's programming to the company's new WZTK-FM 105.7, a 4,500 watt station that doesn't suffer from the problems with interference that AM 1450 has, especially as the use of household electronics has grown over the years. WATZ AM first started operating in 1946.

  • Greater Media/Detroit Sports WMGC-FM 105.1 (Detroit Sports 105.1) has announced it will move to local programming weekdays from 10 a.m. - noon starting Monday July 7, moving Rico Beard and Ryan Ermanni from weekends into that timeslot, replacing the two hours of ESPN Radio's Colin Cowherd.

    Detorit Sports 105.1 provides the ESPN Radio lineup on its HD2 digital subchannel.

CLEAR CHANNEL Country WBCT (B93)/GRAND RAPIDS PD DAVE TAFT has added PD responsibilities for Classic Rock WBFX (101-3 THE BREW), taking over for MATT WALKER, who segues to WBCT and joins NEAL DIONNE in mornings. WALKER's previous Country experience includes BEASLEY WKIS/MIAMI and CLEAR CHANNEL WKKT/CHARLOTTE.

WOOD TV8 meteorologist Laura Velasquez is leaving West Michigan and heading west. The Grand Rapids-area native, a 2004 graduate of Jenison High School, is moving to Denver to join KDVR-TV.

Shannyn Caldwell of Midland has weathered a few storms in her life, and now she wants to help others navigate through their own dark days. Caldwell recently published her first book, "The Healing Season," in which she chronicles a 40-day path to healing from grief. Caldwell, who is one half of the Peter and Shannyn morning show on Family Life Radio, has made it her mission to tell others how an incredible set of losses in her life brought her closer to God.

  • Scott Meier, who had held the titles of Regional Vice President and Market Manager for Cumulus/Detroit has exited the company after having been in those roles since 2007. Meier is a longtime veteran of radio in Michigan having also worked in Flint and the Tri-Cities as well as at CBS Radio/Detroit prior to joining Cumulus.

 

 

 

WJBK-TV Fox 2 Detroit:

On Thursday morning Police in Southfield respond to call made by WJBK security after a 51-year-old woman drove her Lexus through a gated security area and continued to the station's back parking lot. Inside the Fox 2 building an overhead page alerted the staff that the building was on lock down.

A quick tap on the remote isn't enough to avoid the thousands of political advertisements running now or scheduled to be broadcast on West Michigan television. Political candidates for office and special interest groups alike have purchased ad time for at least 10,000 commercial spots stretching from January through Election Day this November, according to documents compiled from the Federal Communications Commission.

Crain's Detroit Business:

The local media market is taking on an infusion of new content from WXYZ-Channel 7, and media watchers say it is expected to stir up the competitive landscape for audience and advertising -- and pique interest in bundled TV ad buys. The $110 million cash purchase that added WMYD-Channel 20 to E.W. Scripps Co.'s TV station portfolio last week was the first step in Scripps' plans for the MyNetwork TV affiliate.

  • Sinclair FOX TV afffiliate WSMH-TV Ch. 66 is adding Sony Pictures Television Networks' "Get TV" to a digital subchannel. The deal between Sinclair and Sony Pictures TV involves a total of 33 stations across the country.

WADL TV Detroit, an 11th metered market television station, will be airing a sneak preview on Wednesday June 25th at 8pm of the programming viewers will be able to see on the new Titan Sports Classic Network beginning this Fall on its dot three Channel.

Emmy and Golden Globe winner Jane Seymour is filming in the Detroit area. The actress isn't working on a new movie or a scripted series, however. She's the host of a national 13-part series called "Feel Grand with Jane Seymour" that's being produced by Detroit Public Television.

With meteorologist Mark Torregrossa at the helm, the site's weather section has ballooned both in content and readers over the past two years, hitting a high of 13 million page views in January, according to Adobe SiteCatalyst numbers provided by MLive.

It's possible that the 2014 KCQ Country Music Fest on Saturday, June 21, was the largest in the event's 23-year history. "I've never seen it this crowded," said Barb Sheltraw, WKCQ-FM, 98.1, morning show co-host.

Lansing State Journal:

Curious Crew is a new TV series all about science being produced locally by WKAR. The local PBS affiliate is holding an open casting call for children ages 8 to 13 to join the cast of the show, which is scheduled for production later this summer.

WXMI-TV Fox 17 Grand Rapids:

After his arrest on Friday, John Balyo has been let go from WCSG radio in a statement from station management. Chris Lemke the general manager of WCSG radio will address the issue on the air at 7:30 a.m. Monday morning during the WCSG morning show.

The reunion of legendary 1960s radio station WKNR Keener 13 went well at the Red Eye Grill in New York City last weekend. "It was truly a special event," says Bob Green, WKNR personality (and eventually, program director).

The Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association has presented former Tigers broadcaster Ray Lane with the Ernie Harwell Lifetime Contribution Award for more than a half century of work on the air in Michigan.

David Bangura has been named president/general manager of WADL Detroit. He had been president and general manager of Granite Broadcasting's WMYD Detroit from 2009-2014 and was general sales manager prior to that. Scripps closed on its acquisition of WMYD, a MyNetworkTV affiliate, June 16. Bangura also put in five years as senior account executive at WJBK Detroit.

WXYZ-TV Ch. 7 / WMYD-TV Ch. 20 Detroit:

Detroit area viewers now have a choice for local news at 10 p.m. 7 Action News at 10 on TV20 Detroit premieres this week. The new 10 p.m. newscast will be anchored Monday-Friday by Glenda Lewis and Malcolm Maddox, with chief meteorologist Dave Rexroth's 7 First Alert weather forecasts, and 7 sports director Tom Leyden's up-to-the-minute sports reports. Weekend editions will be anchored by 7 Action News veteran Dave LewAllen, with meteorologist Hally Vogel and sports anchor Dave Solano.

Crain's Detroit Business:

Cincinnati-based E.W. Scripps Co., the parent company of WXYZ-TV, closed Monday on the purchase of MyNetwork TV affiliate WMYD Channel 20 in a $110 million cash deal that also includes the purchase of WKBW, Buffalo's ABC affiliate, from New York City-based Granite Broadcasting Corp. Along with the deal, WXYZ announced that it will start a local 10 p.m. newscast on WMYD Monday-Friday anchored by Glenda Lewis and Malcolm Maddox beginning tonight.

Allegan County sheriff's deputies responded to more than 100 incidents, most of which were alcohol-related, during this weekend's B-93 Birthday Bash. The incidents resulted in 56 arrests Saturday and 30 arrests Sunday at the two-day country music concert at the U.S. 131 Motorsports Park in Martin, Capt. Frank Baker said in a news release issued Wednesday.

Mike Woolfolk, former anchor for WACH in Columbia, SC, from 1996 to 2010, has joined Detroit ABC affiliate WXYZ, reports The State. After leaving WACH, Woolfolk started a media relations business. TVSpy reported about Woolfolk after he criticized his old station for hiring a beauty queen with no formal journalism experience. "I was astounded when I first heard of this move by WACH-TV, my former employer, and I remain astounded to this day," Woolfolk wrote on his blog at the time. Woolfolk is a Detroit native.

In addition to his work at WBRN, Gar was the former Department Head of Broadcast Engineering Technology and other Electronics Programs at Ferris State University.   • Media personality Lisa Barry will join host Dean La Douceur on the latter's On The Dean's List Blog Talk Radio podcast on Wednesday, June 11th at 11:00 a.m. Barry is a Detroit-area media personality who has been with radio stations WJR, WNIC, WYCD and WXYT-AM. She is also in demand as a speaker, emcee and host for special events.

  • Congratulations to now former WSYM-TV Ch. 47 Lansing chief engineer John Szarowicz on his recent retirement. Szarowicz had been with the FOX network affiliate since it launched as an independent in 1982 and is highly regarded as a stellar engineer and all-around great guy.

Ed Cardenas has joined all-news station WWJ Newsradio 950 and cbsdetroit.com as a Digital Reporter. Cardenas will be a regular on-air contributor and provide editorial content to the cbsdetroit.com website, home of WWJ Newsradio 950.

Michigan Association of Broadcasters to honor four

The Michigan Association of Broadcasters' Board of Directors has announced its 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient and 2014 Michigan Broadcasting Hall of Fame inductees.

Mario Iacobelli, President/Owner of Heritage Broadcasting (CBS affiliate WWTV/WWUP-TV Cadillac/Traverse City/Sault Ste. Marie, 9 & 10 News) will be receiving this year's Lifetime Achievement award on Tuesday, August 26 during the MAB's Summer Celebration at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island.

Entering the Hall of Fame on the same day will be George Blaha, play-by-play announcer for Michigan State University football and Detroit Pistons basketball, Jim Brandstatter, football analyst and play-by-play announcer for the University of Michigan and the Detroit Lions, and Sue Goldsen, Vice President and co-owner of Jackson Radio Works, a cluster of radio stations serving Jackson.

This year's award recipients have over 140 years of combined experience in broadcasting. Their work as broadcasters, humanitarians, and philanthropists can be seen from their local communities to across the globe.

A local three-day country music festival's move in 2012 from Detroit's Hart Plaza to Comerica Park wasn't an easy adjustment for some fans, but appears to be paying off as the event wrapped up Sunday up its 32nd successful year. It was hard Saturday afternoon to find anyone who complained about paying for the event after 29 years of free admission at Hart Plaza, a 14-acre, 40,000-person capacity downtown meeting place along the Detroit River.
