Flint Journal:

A former Flint television personality is suing over a decision not to renew her contract. Former ABC12 anchor, reporter and meteorologist Leslie Toldo filed a lawsuit against the station July 23 after she claims that her contract wasn't renewed by the station after she reported violations of women's civil rights to station management.

Michigan Radio has won a national Clarion Award from The Association for Women in Communications for the news series "Shooting in Muskegon shed light on hero, and problems." The series, which originally aired in August 2013, won a Clarion Award in the category of Best Radio Documentary Series.

After 18-years of hosting Fox 2's Morning Show, WJBK television anchor Alan Lee has decided to pursue a new path in life. On Thursday, Lee anchored his last show morning show with co-host Anqunette Jamison.

Battle Creek Enquirer (subscription):

Friday nights will sound a little different this fall as there will be a new voice for high school football on the local radio station. WBCK Radio in Battle Creek has announced it will provide another season of high school football games on 95.3 FM this fall, and there will be a new play-by-play announcer doing those games in Nate Adams.

National Public Radio's StoryCorps is on its way to Grand Rapids. Modeled after the Works Progress Administration from the Great Depression, the non-profit organization records, preserves and shares stories of Americans with other Americans.

Another big TV consolidation deal is in the works. Tonight, Cincinnati-based E.W. Scripps, and Journal Communications of Milwaukee, announced they will merge their broadcasting operations, while spinning off their newspaper businesses into a new entity. As a result of the deal, which is expected to close in 2015, Scripps will be the 5th largest TV station ownership group operating 34 television stations in 24 cities, reaching 18 percent of the U.S. It will also own 35 radio stations.

JOURNAL COMMUNICATIONS INC. and E.W. SCRIPPS CO. have announced a merger of their broadcast operations and the spinoff of the companies' newspapers in a stock swap. JOURNAL's radio and television stations and SCRIPPS' television stations will be merged into CINCINNATI-based E.W. SCRIPPS CO., while the newspapers will merge into a new publicly-traded company, JOURNAL MEDIA GROUP.

WZZM-TV Ch. 13 Grand Rapids:

WZZM 13, the ABC affiliate owned by Gannett, is making two major announcements today. Lee Van Ameyde has a new role at WZZM 13. He has been named Managing Editor of the WZZM 13 Watchdog Investigative Team. This will be in addition to the investigative reporter responsibilities he currently handles.

Longtime Kalamazoo radio personality Richard Piet will return to West Michigan airwaves on Monday as the morning show host on Battle Creek's WBCK-FM (95.3). Piet worked for 14 years in news and talk radio, including an award-winning stint as the morning news anchor for WKZO-AM (590) where his show won for Best in Category in 2008, 2009 and 2010 from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters.

WZZM-TV 13, following a national search, has a new morning anchor to join Lauren Stanton and meteorologist Aaron Ofseyer on the air weekday mornings. The ABC-TV affiliate didn't have far to look.

Flint Journal:

Another mid-Michigan television station is changing ownership. Gray Television paid $128 million to acquire WJRT ABC 12 and WTVG, Toledo, Ohio's ABC affiliate, from SJL Holdings, the stations' parent company. According to a press release from Gray, which owns several stations across the U.S., both stations lead their local markets in all-day ratings.

Grand Rapids Press:

John Balyo, the former Christian radio host accused of creating pornographic images of a 12-year-old boy, is scheduled to plead guilty to federal charges. Balyo, 35, of Caledonia, on Wednesday was charged with sexual exploitation of a child and possession of child pornography in U.S. District Court in Grand Rapids. Balyo on Thursday, July 24, agreed to plead guilty to both counts, records show.

  • Jackie Green has stepped down as evening host at Townsquare Media/Grand Rapids Modern Rock WGRD-FM 97.9 to join Tribune FOX affiliate WXMI-TV (Fox 17) as an entertainment reporter.

  • Indianapolis-based meteorologist Chris Wright has been hired to fill in some of the weather shifts on ABC affiliate WXYZ-TV Ch. 7 Detroit while Dave Rexroth, the station's lead weather forecaster, recovers from injuries suffered on July 4th.

  • The Grand Haven area has a new FM station to tune in with the sign of new LPFM WAWL-LP 103.5. The station primarily features a Classic Hits format and also will carry local news, information, and sports. The station's web site is www.1035wawl.com.

  • The National Association of Broadcasters has released its list of Marconi Radio Award Finalists with several stations and personalities from Michigan on the list. Check out the NAB's release here.

  • Cumulus/Detroit News/Talk WJR AM 760 has added the local show "It's Your Community" to the station's weekend schedule. The local Public Service show moves from its home for many years on FM sister-stations 93.1 WDRQ and 96.3 WDVD to Sunday mornings at 5:30 AM. The show is hosted Vanessa Denha Garmo, former full-time reporter, anchor and talk show host for WJR.

 


 

Ludington Daily News:

Steve Ruba, 49, of Ludington, was arraigned today on a charge of delivery of marijuana, a four-year felony, after an arrest at 8:02 p.m. Sunday on Lakeshore Drive at Iris Road ... According to the WLDN radio web site, Ruba is the seven-station network's news director.
