oday FOX 17 announced that they have built a new translator in Battle Creek. This new translator will amplify their over-the-air signal in the Battle Creek area, making it easier to access their station, and making their signal more reliable. FOX 17 advises viewers to rescan their televisions or convertor box in order to access this new signal.

WXMI-TV Ch. 17 Grand Rapids:

FOX 17 announced that, starting on Monday, December 1, 2014, they'll begin airing a new show called FOX 17 Morning Mix. This new local lifestyle show will air Monday - Friday from 9:00 AM - 10:00AM, immediately following FOX 17 Morning News.

WWTV-TV/WWUP-TV Ch. 9/10 Traverse City:

John McGowan is a local icon. He's spent more than 40 years bringing us important news stories, taking us to some of Northern Michigan's favorite restaurants and of course, helping run the big show -- Sports Overtime.   • Sold: Children's/Pop WFDF AM 910 Farmington Hills/Detroit from Radio Disney to The Word Network for $3,000,000, pending approval and closing. The Word Network is owned by Kevin Adell, who also owns independent WADL-TV Ch. 38 in Detroit as well as The Word Network television service that is delivered digitally and via satellite.

  • Patti Taylor is the new permanent General Sales Manager for Greater Media/Detroit's rock combo of classic WCSX-FM 94.7 and active WRIF-FM 101.1- she'd already been acting in that position for over a year. Jonathan Ghazal takes over as Sales Manager for clustermate sports WMGC-FM (Detroit Sports 105.1).

 


 

Grand Rapids Press:

Ray Bentley, who has been a local morning sports talk radio host since 2010, said he has been fired by WBBL-FM (107.3). Bentley, co-host with Ryan Schuiling of the "Sports Brothers" show and also a longtime ESPN football analyst, said he was informed via email late last week that he would no longer work at the station.

Variety:

CBS started alerting viewers Friday night that Dish Network could pluck out the Eye in certain markets, in the latest dispute to hit the pay-TV biz. "Attention, Dish customers! You could soon lose CBS," the broadcaster's spots said. Over all, there are 14 CBS-owned stations covered under Dish agreement, plus seven CW, two My Network TV and three independent stations (including WWJ-TV Ch. 62 and WKBD-TV Ch. 50 Detroit).

Former local radio personality Guy Wynn Titsworth died over the weekend, according to postings on Facebook. Guy, known on the air as Guy Wynn, most recently worked at WMOM radio in Ludington.

Veteran West Michigan meteorologist Joe Kopecek is joining WXMI-TV FOX 17 as chief meteorologist. Kopecek, who left competitor WZZM-TV 13 in early October, begins on the air today at 6, 10 and 11 p.m. for the Tribune Media-owned company serving Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo and Battle Creek.

  • Hired: Zach Wellsandt as the new Program Director for iHeartMedia/Grand Rapids Top 40 WSNX-FM 104.5. Wellsandt, who is known on-air as DJ Mayhem will arrive in West Michigan via Spokane, Washington. The PD spot at 'SNX had been vacated by Eric O'Brien who joined MLive.com.

 


 

TheStreet:

Radio Disney Inc.'s sale of its Detroit station has run into static because a buyer terminated its offer after entering the contract stage, according to a source close to the matter. The buyer, a local broadcasting company that had made a verbal offer and reached the contract stage with the Walt Disney Co. (DIS) unit, decided not to pursue Detroit station WFDF and is instead looking to purchase an AM station from CBS Radio Inc., the source said.

Comcast's local-origination channel in Michigan, cn900, will more than double its sports content during 2014-15 with broadcasts of Oakland University and Detroit Mercy basketball games, Michigan and Michigan State hockey games, Wayne State football and basketball games, and Plymouth Whalers games. Reaching every XFINITY TV household in the state, cn900 is available to more than 1 million Michigan homes.

Brent Ashcroft, who has been a part of the West Michigan television sports scene for more than two decades, is ready for a new challenge with WZZM-TV 13.

WZZM-TV 13's Brent Ashcroft is stepping down from the sports anchor desk, and the ABC-TV affiliate has picked up a new sports director and sports reporter. Jamal Spencer, a Detroit-area native and Michigan State University graduate, is WZZM TV's new sports director.

The days of nonstop television political advertisements are over. Until the next election, that is. Viewers in West Michigan couldn't escape the bombardment of ads during the most recent campaign cycle, and perhaps that's an understatement.

Storm Team 8 Chief Meteorologist Bill Steffen is celebrating 40 years on West Michigan television. He first appeared on air in the region on Nov. 5, 1974.

WZZM-TV Ch. 13 Grand Rapids:

A former host of a Christian radio station was sentenced Monday in Calhoun County Circuit Court for sexually assaulting a child. John Balyo was sentenced to 25 to 50 years behind bars for first-degree criminal sexual conduct.

Sleigh bells ring, are you listening? If you listen to The River 100.5 or to Star 105.7 in Grand Rapids, it depends. WTRV-FM (100.5) on Sunday and WSRW-FM (105.7) on Monday began broadcasting all Christmas music, all the time for the holiday season in West Michigan.

  • iHeartMedia/Detroit Adult Contemporary WNIC-FM 100.3 will make its annual change to Christmas music tomorrow, November 6th.

  • Christian Broadcasting System's WSNL AM 600 Flint (Victory 600) has gained FM coverage via a recently purchased FM translator on 106.5 in the Flint area. W293CA was purchased from Educational Media Foundation for $60,000; the deal recently closed.

FOX 17 chief meteorologist Rick Mecklenburg no longer is with WXMI-TV in West Michigan. Chief meteorologist at Channel 17 for the past two-and-a-half years, Mecklenburg issued a statement Sunday night through Facebook and Twitter.

Do they know it's Christmas time at all? They do if they're listening to The River 100.5 FM or Star 105.7 in Grand Rapids. WTRV-FM (100.5) and WSRW-FM (105.7) this morning were airing holiday cheer in West Michigan.

Meredith TerHaar has returned to WZZM as weekend morning anchor and MMJ. TerHaar started at the Grand Rapids, Mich. ABC affiliate as an intern in 2003 and worked her way up to producer of the noon show.

Fox-owned WJBK Detroit (DMA 12) today promoted Amy Andrews to weekday morning anchor of the station's Fox 2 News at 11 a.m. In addition, Andrews will anchor "The Nine" Thursdays and Fridays from 9-11 a.m. Her first day in this new role will be Nov. 4. Most recently, Andrews was anchor of WJBK's 4:30 a.m. weekday newscast and regularly contributed to The Nine.

The Minority Media and Telecommunications Council has brought its sale of WDTW-AM Detroit to the finish line. The buyer, Pedro Zamora, will be giving the city its first full market Hispanic station.

WOOD-TV Ch. 8 Grand Rapids:

A former member of the WOOD TV8 team has died. Richard Tetzlaff, better known Dick McKay, died peacefully in his home on Thursday, according to his obituary. He was 77.

iHEARTMEDIA Top 40 WKQI (CHANNEL 955)/DETROIT "The MOJO in the Morning Show" spoke with the sister of missing MONROE woman CHELSEA BRUCK, who noted that police are in the midst of trying to pinpoint her sister's mood, actions, interactions and whereabouts from that evening. Authorities are looking into details regarding a man who was last seen with CHELSEA.
